I've never been able to muster much enthusiasm about trains, but 1 have sympathy for those who do. When I was asked to go and look at Microsoft's Train Simulator, the very words filled me with a kind of quiet dread. How could anyone think about taking a form of transport that is fundamentally boring in the first place, and actually try to simulate that boredom?
However, after seeing the sim I wouldn't say I was actually a convert, but I've a little more appreciation for what the thermo-clutching masses are on about. And the fact remains that some people just adore trains -usually quiet men of a certain age who remember when trains were interesting, romantic even, and when a new a la carte menu didn't just mean the same crap as before only with a sprig of parsley on top.
This sim, which seems destined to do for trains what Flight Simulator did for planes, puts you primarily in the role of an engine driver in charge of one of a number of steam, diesel and electric locomotives and allows you to drive them across 600 miles of authentically landscaped real-world routes. Alternatively, you can just take a passenger's eye view and spend the time admiring the digital scenery.You're not going to be driving the 5.15 from Liverpool Street to Southend either, because Microsoft has chosen to go down the more commercially viable 'period* route. This puts you in the driving seat on routes such as The Flying Scotsman from Settle to Carlisle in the 1920s, or a modern-day freight train through the Rocky Mountains.Each train requires a different style of driving, from extending the flange valve and cranking up the ratchet handle on the steam locomotives (which will undoubtedly be the game's strongest selling point), to the random button pushing and dial watching involved in manipulating the current electric beasts. It's every trainspotter's wet dream.
One of the most unique things about the package, and one that will reach deep into the hearts of train enthusiasts everywhere, is the route editor package included with the game, which contains many of the original tools used to create the sim. This will allow you to create your own rail routes and locomotives, plus terraform and decorate the landscape to suit your whims.
There's no doubt that this feature makes the possible scope for TYain Sim huge. Expect to see new routes, locomotives, landscapes and buildings, spreading like Internet wildfire after the game's release this spring. These people are dedicated.
Boring or not, TYain Simulator is breaking new ground for sim games, and if it attracts the same kind of audience as Flight Sim, its success is assured. But let's hope it stops there; a couple of years from now I don't want to be previewing Caravan Sim -all the thrills and spills of open-road caravanning from the comfort of your bedroom...

Hi Boss, My Microsoft Train Simulator was supplied on disc but due to simple patches available from the like of UKTRAINSIM.COM, STEAM4ME, Trainsim.com, all have the no disc patch so you don't even have to have the CD in the drive getting hot and distorted.I have run MSTS for quite a few years on Vista but with ageing hardware have had to buy new with only windows 7 or 8.1 available with a free update to 10 later. Since Windows 10 I have not been able to install MSTS with many and various problems apart fromrunning as Administrator which isn't so much of a problem with only one mouse click, if it works. But it doesn't even tho I have reinstalled so many times over the last week using the guide available on STEAM4ME.I have so much value in extra routes, scenarios and Rolling Stock I just want to be able to use it. I am not interested in the current trends for gaming. I am 71 years old, driving a train, dreaming up some work for a train and writing a scenario for othersto perform suits me fine.BestBob.

Yes,the flight sims all have community patches with a noCD fix, so I thought the train sim would be similar.I've used noCD fixes with all games since forever. Never liked having to stuff around with the disk.- Are you using an older machine?

Have you downloadednewer versions of your community patches, or still using the originals?- Have you deleted any files that may have been left after any failed install attempt?These could be in the install location or your UserDocuments orUserAppDataLocal or Roaming folders.(and possibly a Microsoft sub-folder)- Have you tried using Win98 Compatibility? If the game has installed you can do this with the games shortcut or the main.exein the games install folder.If the game is failing to install you can set Compatibility with the setup.exe (or whatever term they use for the installers executable)on the installation disk.Win98 should force the game (or installer) to use only one cpu core, and this can help old games from the single core cpu era at times(can help get the game running, not sure is it helps with installing).- Also disable your Anti-virus temporarily to verify it's not blocking the game silently. Hi again Boss,My machine is not new, couldn’t tell you what make as its a bitser my daughter and her partner put together (desktop) to do her university work (Graphic Design and Games art). It has an MSI mobo with AMD 6300 six core 3.5GHz processor, 64 bit, 8GBRAM.I am using the latest patches as far as I know. Tha game has installed but will not run, gets to a point then bombs to the desktop. As far as I know I have deleted everything between install attempts to the point of manually deleting folders andrunning CClean on the registry.I tried XP, Vista and Win 7 Compatibility without result.When I try to install basic fixes/patches from microsoft It puts them in weird places as if it has a different registry somewhere.So, I will try disabling AV and disconnect from internet as I have the patches stored alreadyand try Win98 Compat.I took the HD from my vista machine and linked it to the newer one and tried to run it from there, Nope.
